Select your hosting packages!
Introduction: After the updates on my Wordpress theme, I was really happy with the results. However, there are bugs and faults that need to be ironed and kicked out! So, I decide to take a break and write an article about “Web-hosting” servers.
For my readers, please stay with me. I am a little busy, but I will write more articles, just to keep you occupy. On the other side, I will need to sort out my previous articles and my new template.
If you encounter a dodgy post or directory, please ignore it and it will be sorted when I am done with the repair.
———————————
Around the world, there are various hosting provider for you to choose and apply. Also, depending on your requirements, you may choose a list of web hosting solutions, and, therefore it is important to research and evaluate individual services. However, choosing the wrong package / service, you may lose a great amount of time and money. Here is a list of common – hosting services for you to choose and decide.
Free Hosting & Shared Web Hosting.
———————————
Shared web hosting is the most common type of service that is used around the world. As the words implies, shared hosting and free hosting are configured to keep your contents and applications on a single – server, which is shared with other website owners, who also use that web-host. Also, in some occasion, there will be ADS that is placed on the header and footer. Therefore, you will need to do some research and find out if they are forcing ADS.
The equipments and servers are owned and managed by the hosting provider, with a group of technician that monitor and manage the servers. However, some providers are not that professional and there is a chance that they can’t help you.
Very often, you may have to use a name that is provided by your host. For example, if I am registered with a free hosting provider, I will have to use this link: http://www.webhost.com/users/~yoursite.htm. Now, do you think that the link looks short, simple and easy to remember? I don’t think so!
Secondly, using a free server / shared server is very frustrating! There will be lots of downtime, lags and bad responses. Even worse, if your web application requires an excessive amount of CPU, RAM or other resources, you will need to hang – fire and think again.
Finally, if you want Gzip compression or any other plug-ins, then you are out of luck!
A lot of the free hosting company, they will not appreciate your request and they will not install them for you. If they applied one plug-in, then the entire server will take effect and it might cause a major problem to the other user. Also, it is a bad idea to create a video website or a server that enable users to download a file.
In conclusion, you are not alone in a single server. But, you are actually sharing a single – server that holds hundreds of users. So, think carefully before you register!
Good
- Very cheap and free for everyone.
- Good for family, hobby or personal sites.
- Small project as a demonstration.
- Can be used for emergencies or as a backup hosting solution.
- Free email is often an option.
Bad
- No domain names.
- Few, limited, or no plug-in options
- Limited security options.
- Limited or no database support
- Limited technical support.
- Bad server response, uptime and lags.
- IP addresses may be blacklisted by search engine.
- Sharing your space with hundreds of users.
- Most hosting provider forced ADS in the header and footer. *If you have this, you may need pay the fees, so that it can be remove / disable.
Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Hosting.
———————————
Virtual servers (VPS), also referred to as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS), provides dedicated server for multiple web hosting customers in the form of “Virtual Computers.” But, the good news is you’re sharing it with a small group and it’s nothing like the “free hosting,” where you are sharing your space with a bunch of users. To make it clear, you are only sharing your space with a group of 20 – 30 users. So, it doesn’t really hurt you that much and it’s a lot cheaper than a dedicated server.
Good
- Cheaper than a dedicated server.
- Multiple software options.
- You can choose your own domain name.
- Better uptime, good response and reliability.
- Good Support.
- Your very own IP address. *Some hosting provider will offer this!
Bad
- Not suitable for beginners.
- Some VPS server doesn’t have Cpanel. *Check this with the hosting provider, before purchasing!
Dedicated Server Hosting.
———————————
Dedicated server is a very complex type of web hosting. This type of hosting allows you to rent a server (private rack) and have access to all its resources just to host one or more websites. With dedicated hosting there is no transfer of assets or personnel to the web host. So, you may have to pay extra and get the staff / engineer to setup your server. ie: Cpanel, HTA plug-ins and ect…
Hosting on a dedicated server is not just about the resources or the capacity. In other words, it is very useful if you are getting tons of visitors or readers. It will also allow you to gain more traffic without lags or downtime.
On the other side, the web host doesn’t take responsibility for anything other than the hosting operations. If you have a business, strategic direction and debugging applications, you will need to manage it in your own time.
Secondly, this package is only suitable for a consumer, who has the right amount of money and the knowledge to maintain the server.
Finally, if you really want to purchase a dedicated server, then you will be very surprise!
You will get benefits, such as secure, high quality – physical infrastructure and high speed internet connectivity. But, don’t just hold your breath! Once you have your own dedicated server, the entire hard drive is yours and you are not sharing it with another company. This will allow applications to operate smoothly and prevents your website performance from being disrupted by others.
Good
- All of the resources is under your control.
- Nobody is using your server.
- Higher level of uptime and better response.
- Dedicated IP address and security.
- High speed internet connectivity.
- Suitable for large business, high traffic website and visitors.
- More memory, bandwidth, capacity and many more.
Bad
- Only for experienced users and webmasters.
- Very expensive!
- You have to pay extra for support. *ie: installations, repair and ect…
- You have to manage everything in your own time. *ie: development and debugging…
- Extra payments. * ie: SSL encryption, dedicated IP address, Cpanel and ect…
Semi – Private Web Hosting.
———————————
Semi – private hosting is nearly identical to VPS hosting (Virtual Private Servers). But, it is a lot cheaper than VPS hosting! If you are registered with a hosting company, such as: “Servers & Domains or UK Pickaweb,” they will provide you with a lot of options in a single package. For example, if I want to register myself with Pickaweb and choose “Webmaster Plan,” I will get “Cpanel Accelerator, Shared SSL, Firewall Protection, free domain registar, 24/7 support, SSI engine and many more!”
By registering yourself with these companies, you can relax and you don’t have to worry. For example: server problems, forced ads and serious lags or downtime.
Finally, you will get professional assistance from the hosting company. So, don’t be afraid to ask the staff if you got a problem.
Good
- You will get a lot of options with Cpanel.
- Shared SSL
- Built in Firewall.
- 99.9% – 99.5% uptime and less lags.
- Professional support and assistance.
- 24Hrs Backup
- You can get a free domain. *Some provider will offer this! You might want to ask first before you register.
- Free Website Builder. *Some provider will offer this! You might want to ask first before you register.
Bad
- All server is under a single IP address.
- You will need to purchase other things. *ie: Dedicated IP Address and installation services.
