Installing Linux OS on your PlayStation 3

Introduction:
Within this guide, you will learn how to install Linux OS directly into your PlayStation console. However, this article requires additional tools, such as: HDTV monitor, USB drive and the correct Linux distribution.

Part One: requirements and preparing your PS3 console
——————————-
a.] PS3 console with 80Gb+ capacity.

b.] USB Keyboard, USB Mouse and Ethernet cable.

c.] Computer with Internet.
Notes: you’ll need a powerful internet line for downloading large files: “700mb+ ISO file.”

d.] CD / DVD Burner and burning software.

Software Two: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

e.] Blank CD / DVD disk.
——————————-

1.] Plug your PS3 into your TV, plug in the power cable, plug in your keyboard, mouse and your Ethernet cable.
2.] When your PlayStation 3 boots, just scroll left and select: Settings >> System Settings >> Format Utility >> Format HDD.

Warning: this procedure will delete all ‘Saved Data’ from your hard drive. So, please create a backup with an external hard drive (FAT32).

3.] Now select either option. But, I would recommend giving 15GB to Linux and keeping the rest for the PS3’s side.

Part Two: obtain a Linux OS disk
——————————-
1.] Download your favourite version of Ubuntu OS disk.

2.] Burn the ISO file into a disk, either a CD / DVD.

Part Three: installing Linux OS
——————————-

1.] Insert your burned Linux CD / DVD into the PS3 disk drive.
2.] Scroll left and select: Settings >> System Settings >> Install Other OS

Notes: it will search and install a file called: otheros.bld, which is off the disk.
Without this file, the disk is useless or unreadable by the console.

3.] Scroll left and select: Settings >> System Settings >> Default System >> Other OS,
After that, just select “otheros,” and press X to reboot your console.

4.] Now, your console won’t boot as default: “XMB”, it will load “kboot” instead.

Notes: if you want to load your default: “XMB”, just hold down the “power button” when you turn it on and it will change your consoles’ system to the XMB.

5.] When you’re using “kboot”, you will need to press “Enter”.
Otherwise the steps will be similar with a different Linux procedure.

6.] Wait for it to load (approximately 5 minutes) and click the install shortcut on the Desktop.

7.] Follow all the prompts and queries, when the window’s exceeds your TV screen, hold “alt + left click” to slide the window around.

Important: remember your username and password and it should only take about 30-40 mins.

8.] Now, follow all the applications’ prompts and queries.

9.] When it reboots, just take out the Linux disk and press “Enter” at kboot, wait, then login at the login screen with your username and password.

Notes: if it didn’t reboot correctly and displays ‘flashing’ underscore, then take the disk out. After that, you’ll need to flip the “power switch”, which is in the back – off, then on, and it should load kboot.

10.] Done!
